Flaxseed Oil
Scientific Name: Linum usitatissimum, also known as Common Flax, or Linseed.
The medicinal value and uses of flax have been known for centuries. The fibres from the long leaves were processed to make ropes and clothes, while the nectar from the flowers was used as a sweetener. The roots were used as a poultice or disinfectant and the sap as an antiseptic and mild anaesthetic for soothing toothache. Flax seeds are rich in omega -3 fatty acids and lignans. Omega-3 is usually associated with fish oil but flax seeds have similar beneficial properties that can be taken without the risk of pollutants and heavy metal toxins. Lignans are powerful antioxidants that help protect the body.
Most human diets currently do not meet the daily EFA (essential fatty acids) requirements. The richest sources of EFAs such as flax seeds, cold-water fish, soy and canola oils are rarely found in our everyday meals. More common foods like red meats and egg yolks can encourage the body's production of bad prostaglandins. Flax Seed oil can help restore the body's natural balance of good and bad prostaglandins.
Nearly every system in the body can benefit from flax seed oil's natural properties, including the cardiovascular system, immune system, circulatory system, reproductive system, nervous system, as well as joints. Research shows low incidence of breast cancer and colon cancer in populations that have high amounts of lignan in their diet. Flax is 100 times richer in lignan than most whole grains. Studies also show Omega-3 fatty acids help lower cholesterol and blood triglycerides, and may prevent clots in arteries, that can result in strokes, heart attacks and thromboses
Derived from the dried ripe seeds of the flax plant the oil is mainly used for its oil form as a nutritional supplement. Flaxseed oil contains almost 50% more omega 3 fatty acids than fish oil, so it is commonly used as a substitute and is a great source for vegetarians. Linseed is a high quality, easily digestible and complete protein and contains almost all the amino acids, mineral and trace elements essential to human health. Flaxseed also contains fat-soluble vitamins A (as beta carotene), D and E and the water-soluble vitamins thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2) and C.
